Role of fission in the r-process nucleosynthesis
نویسنده
چکیده
Fission can have an important influence on the termination of the r process and on the abundances of long-lived actinides, which are relevant for the determination of the age of the Universe. Fission could also influence the abundances of nuclei in the region A~90 and 130 due to fission cycling. In order to quantitatively understand the fission role in the r process, two important pieces of information are needed: the fission probabilities and massand charge-distributions of the fission fragments. Unfortunately, experimental information is only available for nuclei in a limited region of the nuclide chart, and for heavy r-process nuclei one has to rely on theoretical predictions. This manuscript reviews the status of present experimental and theoretical knowledge on some aspects of fission which are important input for the r-process calculations.

The Role of Fission in Neutron Star Mergers and its Impact on the r-Process Peaks
Comparing observational abundance features with nucleosynthesis predictions of stellar evolution or explosion simulations can scrutinize two aspects: (a) the conditions in the astrophysical production site and (b) the quality of the nuclear physics input utilized. We test the abundance features of r-process nucleosynthesis calculations for the dynamical ejecta of neutron star merger simulations...

متن کاملNucleosynthesis in neutrino heated matter : The ν p - process and the r - process
This manuscript reviews recent progress in our understanding of the nucleosynthesis of medium and heavy elements in supernovae. Recent hydrodynamical models of core-collapse supernovae show that a large amount of proton rich matter is ejected under strong neutrino fluxes. This matter constitutes the site of the ν p-process where antineutrino absorption reactions catalyze the nucleosynthesis of ...

متن کاملFission Cycling in a Supernova R-process
Recent halo star abundance observations exhibit an important feature of consequence to the rprocess: the presence of a main r-process between the second and third peaks which is consistent among halo stars. We explore fission cycling and steady-β flow as the driving mechanisms behind this feature. The presence of fission cycling during the r-process can account for nucleosynthesis yields betwee...
